Old Growth Alley Trail — ancient trees with relatively easy access

The place to hike on Haida Gwaii for people who want relatively easy access to ancient trees. This route was cut and marked in 2004. It follows the main stem of the lower Tlell River for 6 km through mixed forest and peat bog for 3.5 more kilometres. Many ancient trees, beautiful places to sit, and a designated swimming hole.

Start/End: Highway 16 north of Tlell @ Hydro Pole 805

Rating: Moderate to Difficult

Distance: 10 k loop

Time: approx 6 hours

Elevation gain: minimal

The route is well marked, though clearing is minimal and no improvements — such as bridges at creek crossings or stairs on steep sections — have been made. The trail has not received maintenance in some time and is extremely rough. Keep an eye out for the blue markers.

Stay out of this area during high winds. Flooding after heavy rains can make access impossible in some areas. Because you are surrounded by trees, this warning is posted by signage at the trailhead.
