Safety on Haida Gwaii

Tell Someone Your Plans

Always leave a detailed itinerary with someone not on your trip — trail destination, expected return time, and vehicle description. Check in when you return.

Trail Safety

Trails can be muddy and unmarked in places. Wear waterproof boots, carry a paper map, and be aware that cell service is limited across most of Haida Gwaii.

Weather & Ocean Conditions

Haida Gwaii weather changes fast. Check Environment Canada forecasts before heading out. Ocean swells on exposed beaches can be dangerous — never turn your back on the sea.

Cell Service & Communication

Cell coverage is limited outside of Daajing Giids, Masset, and Sandspit. For backcountry travel, consider a satellite communicator. Download offline maps before leaving town.

Wildlife Awareness

Black bears are present throughout Haida Gwaii. Store food securely, carry bear spray, and make noise on trails. Eagles, ravens, and Sitka blacktail deer are common — observe from a distance.

Road Safety

Many roads outside of town are unpaved and active logging roads have right-of-way rules — yield to loaded trucks, keep headlights on, and drive to conditions. Logging road maps are available at the Visitor Centre.
