About the Artisan

Maryanne Wettlaufer

Maryanne Wettlaufer's art education began at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto, with an early admiration for the Group of Seven and, after moving west, their contemporary Emily Carr. Her lifelong approach to art-making has been led by a desire to adventure into nature, explorations that let her confront infinite, unexpected moments in the natural world, transforming the wild and supernatural into pure inspiration for her paintings. After living on Haida Gwaii for more than 20 years, she is not nearly finished painting the island's beauty. Recently she has been creating a body of work that explores the regular route islanders take to get building supplies, food staples, and even medical services: Tow Hill to Terrace.
