Sleeping Beauty Trail
About This Trail
Sleeping Beauty is the local nickname for Mount Raymond and Mount Slatechuck, which together resemble a woman's face in repose when viewed from the Village of Daajing Giids. The hike most people mean when they say “Sleeping Beauty” is the Tarundl Trail, which climbs to the summit of Mount Raymond.
The trail starts easily, crossing a footbridge over Tarundl Creek on a flat, grassy path before climbing steadily through young forest. The route is well-marked with yellow circles and orange reflective squares, and includes a ladder and a few rope sections on the steeper pitches — tree roots and trunks double as handholds along the way. Past the halfway point, the trail passes a stand of old-growth cedars before the forest thins into alpine terrain, opening up views over Bearskin Bay and Slatechuck Mountain.
In the final stretch, markers thin out as the trail becomes scrambly: narrow stone steps, a rope section under a fallen tree, and a short rock face with only a rope railing lead into a flat alpine bowl. This bowl, home to a tarn called View Lake, is a popular overnight camping spot. From here, it's another 15 minutes up a steep but well-worn path to the summit of Mount Raymond, with views on a clear day over Rennell Sound, Yakoun Lake, Stanley Lake, Daajing Giids, and the Queen Charlotte Range.
The descent can feel more demanding than the climb due to loose rock, mud, and roots — take your time.
