Small Lake Trail
About This Trail
A quick 10-minute walk each way brings you to Small Lake, a quiet bog lake surrounded by young Sitka spruce, moss, and huckleberry. The lakeshore is soggy, dense with Labrador tea and sundews, with remnants of an old forest fire visible around the water. Elk appear to frequent the area — droppings are common along the boggy ground, so keep an eye out.
The trail is unmarked but obvious: single-track and muddy, so watch your footing. An old interpretive loop once circled the lake; it is now overgrown, though the occasional white trail marker can still be spotted on standing dead cedars. Allow 35-40 minutes if you attempt the full circle.
